Uganda celebrates International Labour Day under the theme “Consolidating the Gains of the Parish Development Model for Increased Productivity and Inclusive Job Creation.” The Uganda Retirement Benefits Regulatory Authority (URBRA) commends the hardworking citizens who are driving the nation forward through their innovation, dedication and resilience.
The national theme reflects the Government’s commitment to enhance household livelihoods and incomes through the implementation of the Parish Development Model (PDM). Launched in 2022, the PDM aimed to uplift 3.5 million households from poverty, and the Government committed UGX42 Trillion to the initiative. The PDM has so far been implemented in over 10,000 parishes across the country, benefiting over 1.2 million households.
As we bask in the gains of this transformative initiative, it is equally vital to cultivate a culture of long-term financial security through retirement planning.
Beneficiaries of the PDM programme should address their current livelihood needs, without losing sight of the need to avoid old-age poverty. A productive workforce must also be secure — empowered not only for today but also prepared for the future.
URBRA encourages all Ugandans, especially those in the informal sector, to take advantage of the vibrant, effectively regulated Retirement Benefits Sector, to embark on a retirement saving journey today. Remember to save only with retirement savings schemes tailored to your needs and licenced by URBRA. Let us build a nation where productivity today leads to dignity tomorrow.
Happy Labour Day
